Early this year, the US government through the new department of government efficiency (DOGE) controlled by billionaire Elon Musk, plans to minimize federal agencies.

Over 60,000 workers appointment were terminated in the beginning of February 2025 in different agencies projected to be more than the USS Agency for International Development (USAID) which includes CDS, NIH which about 5000 jobs terminated and 10,000 voluntarily, the education agency workforce where also reduced from about 4200 to 2100 making it 50% of NASA staff though 20% where voluntarily, therefore reducing the work force to 14,000.

The SSA as well is also facing reduction of about 50%, they also tend to affect thousands of workers at the the SSA.
Also over 800 workers were sacked in NOAA though some were later recalled by the court but and it affected their management operations.

Around April, the American federation of government employees led coalition sued the government challenging the mass termination of job.
Also in may, the judge signed a temporal injunction stoping the termination of some workers appointment and by July the court lifted it, enabling the government to sack multiple workers.

UCFE system: There’s unprecedented delay in providing the benefits for sacked workers, they should be on payroll for sometime but the government are yet to queue into it year in year out.

In the history of America, this is the biggest layoff in federal employee affecting both probationary and career staff.

The irony of all these is that despite all the layoff the government payrolls expenditures is still drastically increasing.

So many organisations are currently showing support such as the NTEU, AFGE, FEEA and NFFE, they offer support like counseling and legal aid.
